Happy Halloween!

D masks,

Happy Halloween weekend! Halloween has always been the D Note's favorite fholiday. There's just something about all that imagination unleashed during this time that really floats our goat. The theme this year is "Bees and Flowers" and Diandra and the crew have put up giant bee hives to decorate. We have 6 halloween events this year starting with a Best303Sounds Halloween show tonight featuring Syke96 (formally Synergy). Tomorrow afternoon we have Music Lessons Of Westminster garage band halloween show. Tomorrow night we have an all halloween set by Slo Children, featuring D Noters Adam and Jeremy DeGraff, Adam Ferrill, Alejandro Castano and Jax Delaguerre. Following Slo Children is Angus Mohr doing their awesome scottish bagpipe rock and roll thing. Sunday day bring your kids in dressed up for baby boogie. Sunday night is our 9th annual D Note Halloween salsa party and costume contest. Then next Wednesday (halloween proper) Quillion is playing at 10p (after Farm Jazz). OK! Come out, come out, whoever you are!

Extra Credit: How about a creepy bee poem by Sylvia Plath to fit our halloween theme this year?

The Arrival of the Bee Box

I ordered this, clean wood box
Square as a chair and almost too heavy to lift.
I would say it was the coffin of a midget
Or a square baby
Were there not such a din in it.

The box is locked, it is dangerous.
I have to live with it overnight
And I can't keep away from it.
There are no windows, so I can't see what is in there.
There is only a little grid, no exit.

I put my eye to the grid.
It is dark, dark,
With the swarmy feeling of African hands
Minute and shrunk for export,
Black on black, angrily clambering.

How can I let them out?
It is the noise that appalls me most of all,
The unintelligible syllables.
It is like a Roman mob,
Small, taken one by one, but my god, together!

I lay my ear to furious Latin.
I am not a Caesar.
I have simply ordered a box of maniacs.
They can be sent back.
They can die, I need feed them nothing, I am the owner.

I wonder how hungry they are.
I wonder if they would forget me
If I just undid the locks and stood back and turned into a tree.
There is the laburnum, its blond colonnades,
And the petticoats of the cherry.

They might ignore me immediately
In my moon suit and funeral veil.
I am no source of honey
So why should they turn on me?
Tomorrow I will be sweet God, I will set them free.

D Note love letter 10/11/12

D band

Remember, when life hands you lemonade, make lemons. Life'll be all like, "WHAAAT?"

There are some terrific things happening this weekend starting with In Due Time's EP release on Friday night. In Due Time is just one of our favorite bands, very very fun and we are excited they are having their release at the D. And of course the halloween hafla is a highlight every year. This one will be packed so come early if you want a seat. The band playing afterward is a terrific surf/reggae band from Orange County California called The Originalites. Extra Credit: A gentleman came and read at the D Note's 100,000 Poets For Change event a few weekends ago named Dale O. McCoy. He told us he had written a poem at the D Note a few years ago and gave it to us. It's a sweet one. Here it is.

D NOTE Angel

An evening at DNOTE my wife at my side

Settling in for music, food and drink to imbibe

Surveying the scene people sitting, talking

Laughing enjoying the fare

My eyes rest on a young woman nearby

In a wheel chair

Lovingly attended to by her family

From the back nondescript and unremarkable is she

She turned with wide open saucer shaped eyes

Looking around with inquisitive wonderment

Her face opened and gazed upon me

An angelic aura mesmerized me instantly

Framed by dark brown hair with eye brows to match

I am struck by the beauty of this face

Natural, unadorned beauty radiating

Innocent serenity from within

A smile disarming, sweet and sincere

Our eyes met I smiled said hello and nodded her way

With nary a word she had her say

She turned back to the affairs of her family

Giving me pause to reflect and appreciate

How blessed was I to have this face gaze upon me

A child of God full of innocence and grace

Brought momentary calm to this busy, noisy place
